Little Words for Little Children
Reiko Kato, President of Meguro UNESCO Association

Please fill your heart with love.
Let us make efforts to listen attentively to how others feel.
Let us call out to someone you find lonely and make friends.
Touching upon something beautiful,
Sharing joy or sorrow with those around you,
You live every day. Thus I pray.

‘UNESCO Peace Concert 2001’(stated elsewhere) started with silent prayer and Little Words written in the program were presented to little children.

In the morning of September 11th, an event occurred in the United States. The screen image looking like a crumbling tower of sand shook people all over the world, pushing them to the edge of grief. That instantly unset the resolution of the United Nations, which named the beginning of the new millennium as the "International Decade of Peace and Non-violence".
Then on October 8th, air strikes began against Afghanistan.
Are we not allowed to hope that people can live life in peace any more? Where has the function and the existence of ‘UNESCO’gone, which was established by our forerunners fifty years ago as the conscience of the United Nations?

What is the true victory over those who disturb peace? Victory can only be achieved when all the people have accepted the spirit of UNESCO. There seems no other way than that. However far and stern the road to peace is, I wish to convey the spirit of ‘UNESCO’with a renewed resolve at this very moment. I wish to have its profound meaning resonating in the hearts of all people. Especially, I earnestly wish this on all aspects of education.
