Report on the 13th International Friendship Youth Retreat

(Part one)
The 13th Retreat was held in the Meguro Citizens’ Nature Village(Wada-mura, Nagano) from August 1st through 3rd. This year seventy-eight people from 12 countries participated. The weather wasn’t perfect, but we believe all members spent a peaceful time there pursuing the theme of this year, “Speak up, Be friends, Walk together.” Here is a letter from Mr. Zoran Stejic , one of the foreign participants, describing his impression of the retreat.
My impressions about the retreat Zoran Stejic Croatia
It was my second retreat this year. I participated for the first time two years ago and I would like to participate next year as well.

The reason is that the retreat is always a great opportunity to learn and experience many things, by sharing time and participating in events with many interesting people from different countries. At the same time, retreat is a chance to make new friends, and to have a lot of fun, because everything is organized in an easy-to-participate and easy-to-understand way.

I enjoyed the discussion very much, sharing with others opinions about difficult topics, trying to understand others and be understood, and finally coming to some conclusions as a group and presenting those to other groups. This year, while there was a variety of different
opinions, I was surprised to see how different groups came to essentially very similar conclusions about certain topics, meaning that, no matter how different the culture or the background is, people can agree on things and can find common values, if there is enough will to do so.

This is, in my opinion, the best thing about the retreat - it shows us that, no matter how different we are, as human beings we indeed have a lot in common, and finding the common values, while recognizing the mutual differences, is a way towards a better world.

I am grateful to all members of Meguro UNESCO and all participants for making this year's retreat another memorable event.
