THE 16TH MEGURO CITY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FORUM
The UNESCO lecture, "An Easy Introduction to Decoding Ukiyo-e" was previously held on Sept. 17. THE U.S. RETURN TO UNESCO

Now the United States has once again become a fully- participating member of UNESCO. The U.S., a founding member of UNESCO, had withdrawn from the organization in 1984 citing concerns over UNESCO's political and ideological bias and its irresponsible financial management.
The 32nd Session of UNESCO's General Conference is being held from Sept. 29 through Oct. 17 at the Headquarters in Paris.
On the first day of the session, U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said that the United States believes in working with other Member States to promote values shared by people throughout the world in her address to mark U.S.'s return to membership. As a former public school teacher, and a present UNESCO Honorary Ambassador for the UN Literacy Decade, Mrs. Bush also mentioned the social significance of education.

* With U.S.'s re-entry, the number of Member States has risen to 190, leaving Singapore the only nation that hasn't returned after having withdrawn from the organization.
