No.201-4

Lovely guests from Afghanistan

Three children aged 12-15 and two of their teachers, visited Moriya Kyouiku Kaikan, Gohongi elementary school and Meguro UNESCO Association office with staff of NFUAJ. (Sep.16, 10am-2pm). They came to Japan to take part in the music festival held at Nijyo castle in Kyoto, and wished to observe the education system and UNESCO activities during their stay in Tokyo. They first observed Meguro UNESCO Association's Japanese classes held at Moriya Kyouiku Kaikan, and afterwards took part in exchange lessons and shared the lunchtime with 6th graders at Gohongi elementary school. After that, they dropped into Meguro UNESCO Association office to talk with the president and other many members. People could only wish peace for the lovely children from war-ravaged Afghanistan.

CAMPAIGN FOR MISWRITTEN POSTCARD CONTRIBUTIONS
We are collecting unused postcards, miswritten or too old to use, in order to fund the TERAKOYA projects in India, Nepal, Cambodia and other countries. The refund from one unused postcard is worth, for example, one notebook, three pencils and one eraser in India, or three ballpoints in Vietnam. We'd like your kind cooperation. (Inquiries: Meguro UNESCO)
UNESCO TERAKOYA MOVEMENT -fueled by miswritten postcards
In Japan, about two centuries ago in the Edo period, the three R's (reading, writing and arithmetic) were generally practiced by people. This was irrespective of their social position, even though the social status system of the time was very strict. TERAKOYAs were the schools that scholars, warriors and Buddhist priests opened for children to learn reading, writing and use of the abacus. Nowadays, approximately a billion people around the world are either children with no access to school, or adults suffering from illiteracy. The UNESCO TERAKOYA Movement offers 'places of learning' to these people. This movement was originally started by the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (the federation of non-governmental UNESCO associations). In some areas, the movement is known by the Japanese title 'TERAKOYA'. The profits from recycling miswritten postcards and other contributions provide the finances for the movement.
