No.206-2

The General Assembly and Inaugural Meeting for the Specified Non-profit
Organization To Be Called           Yasuo Hirata, Chairperson, the executive committee of the 50th anniversary

Meguro UNESCO Associationfs fifty- first General Assembly is to convene on the afternoon of May 22nd (Sat.). During the assembly, we will also hold an inaugural meeting for Meguro UNESCO Association as a specified nonprofit organization (hereinafter called gNPOh). The board of directors is making preparations.

Agenda items of the General Assembly will be the next fiscal yearfs activities/budget plans, the previous yearfs activity report, and approval of the account settlement as usual. In addition, assuming that the current voluntary association will be reorganized into NPO, a resolution should be passed to disband the current organization upon the establishment of NPO. Moreover, another resolution should be passed to hand over the property and others to NPO after notifying of the dissolution and balancing the books. Termination of the board membersf duties should be decided also.

Agenda items of the inaugural meeting will be: the approval of the letter of intent and the articles of incorporation, formulation of activities and budget plans for the fiscal year 2004 and 2005, appointment of the board members for NPO, consideration of their job description, decision on whether they will be compensated or not, and if compensated, what amount to be paid, the member agreement, the amount of the admission fee and the membership fee, the makeup of and the administration by Secretariat, and any other administrative issues.

After the inaugural meeting, application documents will be sent promptly to Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Public inspection of the application form will take 2 months. The examination by the municipal government will take place within 4 months of the date of receipt including the period of public inspection, followed by an authorization process. We need to get NPO registered within 2 weeks of the receipt of the letter of authorization. With those processes completed, NPO will start in full swing around early autumn.

It takes a long time to go through those procedures, however, once acquiring NPO status, Meguro UNESCO Association will take more social responsibilities with increased transparency and fairness toward more significant activities taking place. We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Please note that since whether to gain a NPO status or not is an important decision to make, we are thinking of asking if you are for or against it in connection with the opening of the assembly.

Report on Study tour to India

This yearfs study tour to India took place from March 21 to April 5, with 18 participants varying from high school students to workers. It was a very good chance for me to see the actual spot of the Terakoya projects, which could be said one of the most important activities of UNESCO. This experience made me think about the meanings of the richness and the poverty I had seldom thought about until then. Now I sincerely think I would tell people what I saw and what I thought there and will make best efforts to raise peoplefs interest to UNESCO Activities. (Vice Chairperson of Youth Activity Committee, Takeshi Kusuhara)

The study tour organized by the NFUAJ was planned to visit Gokak, Karnataka State in India which was one of the recipients of UNESCOfs Terakoya project, to promote friendship with native people who were left behind by development. The tour achieved the projectfs objective through visiting literacy classes, vocational schools, etc. The participants acted vigorously with various events such as an exchange with local university students, a visit to Agra (location of the Taj Mahal, a world heritage site) and an exchange with the Confederation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations of India in Delhi. Mr. Kusuhara sent us the above report only a few days after returning from the tour even though he was exhausted from the long trip. We are looking forward to hearing more detailed reports from him at many other occasions such as the Youth Retreats, etc.
