 Learning Japanese for the First Time  (13 lessons)

Dates & Time:  Sept. 7 - Oct. 21, every Tue. & Thu. (10:00 - 12:00）

Instructors: Members of Meguro UNESCO trained in teaching Japanese
Eligibility:  Foreign residents 16 and over, studying Japanese for the first time　　
For application:  Write “Learning Japanese for the first time”, your name, address, phone number on a postcard or fax sheet and send it to Meguro UNESCO. First 30 applicants will be accepted.
Fee:  \2,500 (including textbooks)

In 1999, the year when Koichiro Matsuura, Japanese Ambassador to France, was elected Director General of UNESCO, the English version of our ‘Short News’ made a fresh start. It was decided that it should be published again, despite a period of suspension. v I started to use my old typewriter for translating the Japanese articles into English, but it was already a ‘museum piece’ that couldn’t print letters clear enough for anyone to tell a ‘c’ from an ‘e’. Before long, I bought a cheap word processor, which served me well for a year or so. But then I was asked to send my translations by e-mail! That was it. I took the plunge in purchasing a personal computer that I feared even to touch, and timidly booted it up. v Thanks to our young competent staff members who joined us later, there has been gradual improvement in both translation and editing, and I am now just amazed at the sophisticated-looking pages. v As for myself, I’ve managed to fulfill my role so far, by frequently consulting my dictionaries, which seem more reliable than my own aging mind, and especially with the kind help of the native speakers who have been doing an admirable job in proofreading. v We must make the most of the time and energy of those who kindly cooperate with us, and the expenses involved in publishing the newsletter. The content is what counts. v We members of the Meguro UNESCO hardly ever have the chance to meet together all in one place, which makes this newsletter the only contact point between us all ? the ‘Short News’ must function as a forum for exchanging ideas. It must also carry attractive articles in order to be loved by the members. So what can I do? To begin with, I started to attend the regular editorial meeting this year. (M. Miyamoto).
