An Invitation to the 34th Meguro UNESCO Concert

Indiana University Violin Virtuosi - The ensemble’s first tour of Japan

The Violin Virtuosi, the premier group of the Indiana University String Academy, will perform a concert on June 11 (Fri.), 7 p.m., at Meguro Persimmon Hall (Main Hall).

The Virtuosi consists of nine young violinists between the ages of 15 and 18, all extremely gifted students of the String Academy, and the pianist Chih-Yi Chen.

Mimi Zweig, professor of violin and viola, directs the academy. Since 1972, Zweig has developed children's string programs across the United States. The academy has produced many outstanding talents, including the world-famous violinist, Joshua Bell.

As for the Indiana University School of Music, it is known as one of the best music schools in the United States. The renowned Japanese cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi is now a professor at the university.

The Virtuosi gives more than thirty concerts a year, in the U.S., at such places as the Carnegie Hall. Last year, they have completed a successful tour of France. This year, they will be performing in Japan and in Spain.

--- The establishment of a “UNECO” was planned at first. However, after the dropping of the atomic bomb, science became a factor that just couldn’t be ignored. “S” for Science was inserted to make “UNESCO”.
